GEARS was founded in 1997 by Robert Gay.    Bob was the quantitative analyst and on the stock selection committee at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette for seven years. He began his own research company modeling his GEARS research service after work performed for institutional clients while at DLJ.

Today, GEARS incorporates the latest technology using pattern recognition, high speed computing and internet resources to develop, then deliver targeted investment decisions. These decisions are produced based on the level, direction and quality of a company’s growth. Computerized pattern recognition algorithms read corporate accounting data of over 4,400 North American companies looking for changes in sales growth, margins, costs, and balance sheet items that have had a reliable effect on the share price over the long-term record of each company. Any change in the direction of any of these principal components may be important information about the future direction of the growth rate of the company.

GEARS can customize its research to each client. The details and rationale behind each buy and sell recommendation are articulated in easy-to-read research reports which are packaged according to the specific investment preferences and universe of the client. Macro and micro level analysis of indexes, industries, sectors and investment style portfolios are custom designed for decision-makers across the spectrum from short-term traders to industry analysts. These reports are updated weekly.

Our principal performance edge is in making a better sell decision. Over the past decade, our sell decisions have produced a positive return over a hold strategy 68% of the time. This important component of our service monitors clients’ stock lists looking for evidence of deteriorating growth or quality of earnings. Those stocks are flagged and a research report describing the details and rationale for the sell decision are sent to the client.

With our buy-ideas search component, we can customize a search based on any pattern or criteria set over any time horizon or market capital range.
